Slam Dunkin’ To Build A Dorm

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending yet another Hoops For Grace event held at Bush courts located right off Lugogo bypass hosted by 40 Days over 40 Smiles. There’s beauty in appreciating what we have and sharing it those less fortunate. We very easily get caught up in chasing that next big deal, or the routine of our lives, forgetting to take a step back and be thankful.

Amazing events like Hoops For Grace, therefore come at a point every year and help us stop, to appreciate that we can give back, in even the smallest way to help create a safe and happy environment for the less fortunate children in Uganda.

Being a social event helping to raise money to help build a dormitory for the Elohim girls, where we also get to catch up with old friends, whilst watching or playing basketball or meeting some of our favorite artists is what makes Hoops For Grace a spectacular event. Their events are major source of funding, which work with online campaigns and monthly subscription paid by some supporters of the cause.

When founder Esther Kalenzi decided to pull together her friends and people she know from social media, she had no idea that this would later turn into an organization someday. It’s kind of hard to believe that 40 Days over 40 Smiles, is run by a team of volunteers with no experience in the NGO industry, who came together as friends with an aligned passion to bring positive change to the world.

“Somehow the needs of the vulnerable children we met convicted me to do more. Today, we have worked with over 500 orphans and vulnerable children and raised approximately Ugx 200 million mostly from ordinary Ugandans.”  They would love to have full time staff that can run the organization’s activities daily with no distraction, but until then are continuing to create a difference in the lives of less fortunate children in Uganda by improving their standards if living and creating a safe and happy environment for them to live.
This was the 6th Hoops For Grace event, held once a year, with numbers increased from 200 to about 800 people to raise money to complete a dormitory for girls in Elohim.

Earlier in the year, they managed to raise half the budget needed and are optimistic that by end of October, the dormitory shall be up. There were 20 teams formed amongst friends for the basketball teams, dribbling for the top spot this year.
